What make / model of phone is it? What was the virus?
As of three months ago:
"The current slate of viruses all target the Nokia Series 60 smartphones
running the Symbian operating system . A smartphone combines phone=20
and PDA functions into one device. The good news is that 96% of the=20
phones sold last year are not smartphones, use an operating system other=
=20
than Symbian and are, therefore, completely immune to existing mobile=20
threats." [1]
(Granted the 96% probably refers to the US only, but it's close enough)
And also:
"the number of reported infections of each variant of Cabir, Commwarrior=20
and Skulls fall in the 0-to-49 range, according to Symantec's virus thre=
at
database."
So I'm afraid I do not believe what the Vodafone shop told you.
