FN-FORUM: modem problem

Trying to fix a friends PC.

Modem seems to have died on it, so trying an external one I've got lying
around.

When I plug the external modem into my friends PC the mouse cursor keeps
flashing between pointer+hour glass and normal pointer, as though it's
trying to detect the hardware.

Anyone have any thoughts on what exactly it's doing?
