About Us*
Camstreams was created several years ago as a means to allow people with
an interest in streaming their own web cam to do so with ease and free
of charge. We are currently working on a completely new service but it
is taking an awfully long time! In the meantime, we thought we would
open Camstreams up to the public so that you can stream your very own
Windows Media webcast from your home PC, through our server.
*What you Get*
All accounts receive 500kbps of bandwidth on the camstreams.com server,
with a viewer limit of 15. If you feel you require more than this,
please let us know [EMAIL REMOVED] - we will take each
case on its merit, remembering... this is a free service!
*How it Works*
Our server connects to your computer and 'sucks' the audio/video stream,
whenever there are viewers. It then redistributes the stream to the
viewers - It has its advantages this way: Firstly you only ever upload 1
stream to camstreams.com (or zero if no viewers are watching), so you
don't use a huge amount of your own bandwidth all the time, like you
might do if you were, for example using Webcam32 for streaming. Also, it
has the advantage that your IP address is never given out to the viewer
- they see your stream directly from camstreams.com.
*How do I get started?*
When you sign up - and activate your
account (you will receive an email to do so), you will receive another
email, which contains detailed instructions on how to download, install
and configure /Microsoft Windows Media Encoder/, which is the piece of
software that does all the hard work for you. This 'crunches' your video
and audio into an excellently efficient stream which the server can then
connect to, and forward on to viewers.
It is now that you will be able to log in to the user area. When in this
login area, you are able to tell the server the IP address of your
computer, so it knows where to go pick the stream up from, also it can
tell you how many viewers you have, list their IP addresses/hostnames,
show your monthly bandwidth stats and provide vital information on how
to link to/embed your stream.
*I have other questions concerning my stream...*
Consult the FAQ within the user area once you have signed up.
*Commercial events/enquiries*
Feel free to contact us [EMAIL REMOVED] if you have a
special requirement and we can discuss the possibilities.
