He's made no comment - just sent a CD in the post...

Quite right - my thought though was that the Canon may have all sorts of
functionality (auto-focussing, spot metering etc) that could depend on
assumptions that the lens is of a particular type - eg, many manufacturers
of digital SLRs now manufacture specialised digital lenses, even though
their mounts will take standard lenses. Getting on unfamiliar ground here,
so I'll stop hypothesising... !
