FTP doesn't automatically send the contents of sub-folders (unless anyone
knows otherwise) you would have to know the names of each subdirectory and
specifically send the contents of that dir too... E...

Perforce certainly does (though you need to fiddle with webprojects a
bit).
Ankha works for subversion but we found it was easier to just do source
control outside VS.net=20

CS-RCS Basic is a good freebie if your familiar with Sourcesafe and no
fussed with multiuser access. The software just works out of the box I
found.
Subversion is better and I do like it after switch...

XP Home doesn't include the IIS web server software that is used for

XP Pro has IIS XP Home doesn't. I'm sure there are some hacks around to
allow IIS to be installed on XP Home.
Other option would be a LAMP install on XP home to learn PHP.=20

We used to use Perforce, which you'd be able to use for free although
it's not open source. At the moment we use Subversion with TortoiseSVN,
though we'll be moving to VSTS when it comes out...
