Re: FN-FORUM: Linux V Windows

Personally i would agree with your programmer. I am very anti-windows
when it comes to servers, so much so that i am extremely preduced
towards it and would NEVER consider a windows server solution for any
purpose. Im not saying im right, as im not knowledgeable enough to
justify my "belief". But i do hang around with a lot of linux types so
i suppose it rubs off on to me.
But, of course, Rus is correct, so long as secured properly then it
shouldnt be a problem.
The points i do know about is that linux is cheper, the OS itself is
free (there are exceptions) so the cost is lower than that of a
windows system where you have to pay for a licence. And linux will
perform better, when running a linux machine as a server you do not
need X, X is a window system, which makes your GUI. If you make
everything command line then you enhance performance, this may not be
such a big issue on the likes of dedicated servers and such, but if
you have a dedicated server your looking for performance. On windows
you cannot turn off the GUI (if someone knows different please correct
me).
Another point which can be argued both ways is the fact that linux
(most ditros anyway) is open source. The downside being that anyone
that can look through the source can find vulnerabilities, however the
upside being the same point, if more people are able to find
vulnerabilities then it can be found and fixed quicker. With windows
you only rely on MS to release fixes.
Anyway i shall end my rant as i think im getting a little carried away
here and off course. Im sure i'll get some stick about it, but in my
opinion, go for linux everytime.
