FN-FORUM: Question about Freelance Pay Options

Hi everyone,

I am relatively new to the world of freelancing, so I apologise now if
this has been asked before, but I have had a few offers for design work
in the US, and each one is offering different payment schemes, and I
would appreciate any info from anyone.
The first company has offered to compensate me on a 'retroactive base'.
The second company has offered to compensate me on a 'spec base'. The
third company has offered to compensate me on both a 'retroactive and
spec. base.'
Before I start asking questions and aound like a complete idiot, some
background info would be much appreciated.
