If the external is empty then you can still use it to create a bootable
image depending on your machines bios, mine certainly will boot from USB
drives for example.

There is a simple answer, have a spare harddisk and before updating your
machine clone the existing disk to the new one then remove that from the =
pc.
That way is anything goes wrong you can swap th...
