If the external is empty then you can still use it to create a bootable
image depending on your machines bios, mine certainly will boot from USB
drives for example.

In addition if you are using software such as Ghost then it is normally
possible to run it from the floppy to restore images but personally I =
always
prefer to simply have a drive copy that is swappable for speed of =
recovery.
