FN-FORUM: Access Q

date posted 31st August 2005 20:36

Hi

I have a spreadsheet containing records. Each record has an ID
number. My client wants me to create an Access DB from this
spreadsheet. He wants to keep the IDs for each record. Then any new
ones entered should have have their ID automatically generated (so an
AutoNumber data type). I was planning to use this ID is as the UK.=20
So I set up the table and made this field just a Number data type. My
plan was to then change it to autoNumber (random) so my records would
all have unique numbers. When I try this it says you can not change a
field to autoNumber. Is there no way round this? It looks like I have
to add an autoNumber field in addition to the existing IDs. Does this
make sense?

TIA
Paul
