If you're on Windows XP, I don't think it matters if Firefox is your
default browser, what with I.E. being so deeply embedded in the O.S.
I have read about attacks which use this exploit, and firewalls,
anti-virus stuff are fairly helpless against it.
Even if this turns out not to be the case, I strongly advise you to use
Thunderbird as your email client.
