Re: FN-FORUM: flat screens?

Hi Richard,
In addition to the other comments I would consider things like:
- What size screen you may be considering
- Budget
- Ensuring it is not only High Definition capable but that (ideally) =20
it supports the 1080p vertical resolution and that any digital (HDMI) =20=
sockets and circuitry include the High-bandwidth Digital Content =20
Protection (HDCP) technology to properly decode any encoded content. =20=
There are not that many lower priced panels that support 1080p (they =20
often support 1080i) but the vast majority of the recent brand name =20
panels will support HDCP.
- Mounting - will you want it wall mounted or on furniture?
- Sources - what will you plug into it? I install these things for a =20=
living and the number of people who are disappointed in their LCD/=20
Plasma picture because they are using cruddy DVD players, poor =20
quality cables and lower end connections (e.g. S-Video, composite, a =20
=A35 SCART cable even on an RGB connection, Sky over RF - as in when =20
using a magic eye - etc.) beggers belief. Also, think about if you =20
need to connect things like a PC, console, video camera etc.
- Sound. Will you be using a surround sound amp, your stereo Hi-Fi =20
or will you use stereo speakers connected to the panel.
- TV source. Will it need an integrated TV tuner or do you have a =20
separate Sky/Cable/Freeview box? If so and you are using hi-fi/=20
surround sound amp for audio then you may want to consider a straight =20=
display with no tuner or even audio circuitry. These are intended =20
for business applications but sometimes offer a superior picture.
Hope that helps!
