RE: FN-FORUM: Designers, how much time time do you usually spend ... ?

date posted 3rd January 2006 19:06

You have to work at a pace that you're comfortable with; A pace that
produces the best results and satisfaction for your client and delivers
optimum end-product quality. Regardless of how experienced a
designer/developer is, they should always try to refine their
methods/processes to be more time efficient (while not compromising on
quality). The more projects you can fit in within a set time, the higher
your productivity and hence overall income.

I normally work WITH the client to produce a very detailed, agreed,
design/development brief. I look at the company (marketing/brand themes and
colours/styles etc), the competitors' styles and themes, and the customers'
desires and expectations. I then pencil sketch the layout (for my eyes
only), then code a draft page (HTML/CSS) with relevant graphics. I then work
with the client to tweak that layout. I don't do overall layouts in
photoshop or illustrator. Only on paper. Up to that point takes around 2
days. I expect everyone works differently.

The important thing for me is the detailed design brief at the beginning. It
cuts down on later draft changes and provides a foundation for later
design/layout arguments.
