Add SLES to your server list. Yes you have to pay for it but its solid and
enterprise capable.

Just for into SUSE were the first liux company to have a unified source tree
beating Redhat by 5 years. They also repaid their venture capital in 4.2
years and were the first Linux company to make a profit. Redhat made a
profit for the first time in 2004.

You can get SUSE Pro versions (not the latest) from Linux Emporium for cost
of cd/dvd.

mandriva == formerly mandrake (an even worse name now, sounds like a
cheap hatchback)

biggest thing to watch out for running 'nix on old(ish) boxes is that
the kde (and even the newer versions of gnome) are resource hogs - all
that eye candy costs, better grabbing a lightweight desktop or distro to
start with

rest is just my opinion based on what i've tried:

server-ish:
redhat - great (or was before licensing changes), been around a long
time, has some quirks as a platform (the redhat way)
fedora - nice except the release schedule is punishingly fast
centos - better release schedule that fedora, essentially the same os
debian - a law unto itself, its release schedule isn't called 'glacial'
for nothing, great for a server though (rock solid)

desktop-ish:
mandrake (havent tried mandriva) - felt a bit 'tacky' to me, dont know
what its like now - used to have weird update policy (pay) iirc, which sucks
suse - superb distro, but you really want the pro version which will
cost you (dont *need* it, but its a lot less hassle)
fedora - pretty slick in desktop config, same release issue obvioulsy (4
isnt long out and 5 is rapidly on the cards)
ubuntu/kubuntu - easy as pie :D, theyll even send you a stack of discs
free - one of which is bootable so you can check your hardware is
compat. (faster downloading it!!! takes weeks)

gentoo - both configs rock solid, takes a bit of setting up (build from
nearly-source, builds against your actual architecture so its as fast as
it gets. there are several 'partiallly compiled' stages if you dont want
to go the whole hog) - my favourite; just dont accidentally request to
install the entire kde base package on a PII and wonder why your machine
has been compiling for three days...(yup, it was me)

stay away from the likes of xandros and whatever lindows is called now,
they suck butt IMO, I had nothing but trouble with them - they aren't
the promised 'easy config'
