The most common is 1024x768 but about a quarter of people still have
800x600 monitors (and many users of larger monitors don't browse full
screen).

You should design for less than 800 wide (say 770) to take account of
scroll bars etc.

Would still help to have screenshots or links. As you're a
freelancer not a company you just need to say "I developed this while
working for Newsquest".
