Which browser are you using to test this code?
You should really try Firefox for this. It's by far the best browser for
Javascript development. If there's a Javascript error on a page then you
get a little red warning icon in the top right hand corner of the
browser window and clicking on that brings up the Javascript console
which tells you exactly what the error is.
And if you want any more help, there's always the Venkman Javascript
debugger which is available as a Firefox extension.
