Re: FN-FORUM: inland revenue and NI contributions help please!

Q1. Why do i need to be self employed when i only do a few jobs a
year if some one asks me too and i do not actively look for jobs?
Because that's the law in this country - everyone has to pay the "right
amount of tax". Just don't ask for payment if you want to help others and
you'll be fine. There are people who are REALLY in business who could do the
work - you could refer other people to them.
Q2. If I have a certificate of small earnings should i be making a
voluntary contribution of NI class 2?
No point. It won't get you anything and you'll get benefits etc because of
your day job.
Q3. Is anyone els having this problem?
Surely there is an easier way of doing a few jobs a year as i pay NI
in my full time employment already so all i want to do is pay the tax
i owe on the few jobs i do?
No. The only other way to do it is to get taken on by another employer (or
your client) and get them to include you on their PAYE scheme. Or just
volunteer to do the work as a favour - you'll probably receive a few pints.

Some how i have managed to get myself in a right pickle!
First i registered late so i got a fine for £91.50 then because i was
told to register as self employed even though i am also fully
employed by a company in the day time i now have to pay NI class 2
contributions but my earnings are small so they have granted me a
small earning certificate. There is a 4 month period before the start
date of the certificate for which they would like payment of class 2
contributions. In my last letter they have stated i do not need to
pay for this as they can see i have small earning but in the same
sentence say my benefits and entitlements will be affected such as my
pension. In the same letter they have said that i may be entitled to
a refund that is £91.50, the same as the fine they gave me in the
first place so i imagine they are refunding that to me due to small
earning certificate but i am in no way sure of that.
