RE: FN-FORUM: OT boats looking for crew
date posted 13th March 2006 17:59
This is what I did when I was 20 got the first flight to Nice, France.
Hopped onto a train to Antibes (an hour or so if I remember correctly).
Then hit the bars first asking the bartenders if they know of any Yacht
skippers that might be in. The Irish bars are the best. Then go talk to
them, find out what the deal is locally and if there is any work about.
Failing that start walking the dock. Plenty of big big boats there that
might be looking for day-workers/crew. Most crew start off as day-workers.
If that fails Monaco is pretty good for looking for work. But avoid at all
costs a boat called Golden Princess as the owners a total whacko.
Get him to write up a CV of all his past experience Sailing. This will go
down well. Most importantly make sure he's clean shaven. No skippers gonna
employ anyone on a private yacht if the crews look slightly scruffy. So
clean shaven and tidy hair. Look the part basically.
The other way to do it is to get his ass down to some of the big regattas
that are going on where the big boats are. Get talking with the skippers to
see if there is the possibility of any crewing jobs. Private charter boats
are pretty good to work for.
Southampton/London boat show is also a good number to get your ass to. I
find the Guinness bar is the place to be. Very easy to find the right
people there.
Also you could contact human resources at princess yachts in Plymouth I used
to deliver yachts for them many a moon ago.
HR: [EMAIL REMOVED] a contact there might be Bob Turner not
sure if he's working there or not any more.
If I think of any more ill let you know.
Regards,
Darren
