Try opening in OpenOffice and save in opendocument format? That's the best
way to extract images from .doc files.
The opendocument format is a zip file, so you can open it with WinZip or
similar and see the contents: XML for text, plus the actual images (full
resolution!) - and perhaps the actual embedded fonts?
