It had crossed my mind why a printed portfolio would be required. My CV
contained numerous links to my work but I suppose a CV is not the place
they'll look for my work.

why does the portfolio need to be printed? put some of your best work on a CD (if it'll run like that) if not, create a page on the web and give them the URL. A big part of assessing a web designers...
