On the PC I have very successfully used this bit of software:

DVD PixPlay, Image Slideshow Burner Software. Create Photo CD's and
DVD's for your DVD Player

not madly expensive, but very effective.

bear in mind that all these slideshows take your image and convert it to
video with all that that entails - 25fps, interlacing etc.

so pictures will most definitely soften when shown in this way.
