Like you said, there's lots of attempts at free postcode databases.
The simple fact is there isn't any way to get ahold of up to date data
on this without buying or stealing it. Anyone hosting a free service
has obtained the data either from an out of date source (the last time
a dataset was publicly available free was more than five years ago) or
they've "borrowed" a dataset and don't have a legitimate license to
distribute it.
Having said that, I'm pretty sure the Google Maps API allows you to
put in an address and get back geographic coordinates.
