Vim for me. If you are familiar with the vi editor, then Vim is more than
adequate. All colour coded and you can change the colour scheme to suit
your eyes. If you need to edit other languages, then most are covered
i.e. C, Perl, shell scripts etc; if its not, then you can create your own
schemes.
Assuming a Linux server, if you ever have to edit directly on the server,
then vi will be available and is obviously exactly the same as Vim (albeit
without colour coding etc.).
Its free of course and vi has been around a while now (over 20 years
anyway). http://www.vim.org/
Mind you, if you don't know vi and don't feel inclined to learn how to use
it, don't bother :)
