Dominic,
Subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 means you are on a network with one solitary
IP address, namely the one you yourself are using. The most exact subnet
you can ever want is 255.255.255.254 and even that only allows for one other
address. Most common subnets are 255.255.255.0 which means any address with
same first three octets is on your network or 255.255.0.0 which means any
address with same first two octets is on your network.
If you want a more exact explanation of subnets I am sure you can google it
up, but I am pretty sure that is where the problem lies, despite the error
message seeming to indicate otherwise.
