Re: FN-FORUM: Quark XPress, Graphic design

I used Quark for a few years doing magazine design, my thoughts are:
* It is primarily used in publication design
* Great for using large amounts of text because you can easily create
consistent templates for multiple page layouts (margins, gutters, page
numbers etc, pagination and creating contact sheets are also easy)
* Big benefit is it uses OLE (object linking and embedding) - you when you
import a hi-res images it is displayed on the page but doesn't actually save
with the file (so your quark file, when saved, is a very small size), when
you open up a quark file that has images in it the program searches for your
images in the folder you originally imported it from, generates a low-res
version of the image and displays it on the page. for example, a 12 page
booklet designed in most other design programs, that contains hi-resolution
images ready for print, could go up to 30Mb+ (all-in-one file if you like),
when working/editing such files your computer could slow down quite a bit -
especially if you multi-task with other programs open. With a quark file it
doesn't because you're not actually handling the hi-res images - just
low-res versions so your computer refreshes quicker, works faster etc.
When your design is finished you simply 'collect for output' and the program
collects all the images into one folder for you, then it's just a case of
burning it onto a CD and get it to your printer.
* Images imported into Quark from photo editing packages that can create
paths - such as Photoshop, can break you away from using normal square
shapes that images/photos come in, also great for text wrapping.
unfortunately it's not the most creative program so whatever you import must
be prepared creatively elsewhere
hope this helps
