Martin,
Most of the "piece-meal" stuff comes through other sources such as
web-designers I know. I do the engineering side - when I have full projects
I farm the design side out to them.

Although, things are getting a bit slower at the moment on the full web
projects, most of the work coming my way seems to be AJAX and ASP.NET
re-engineering stuff with very little design work.

If you check out sites like GetACoder you can see how cheap the rest of the
world will go with their quotes. In some cases $300 - $600 for full
ecommerce websites - with design!
