RE: FN-FORUM: site template

date posted 10th May 2007 17:12

Hi David,

I'm sorry - I have to agree on this. Looking at in FF2 - it did not look
attractive at all.

The curved edges on the title bar look pixelated, and the central logo is
dijointed, and equally pixelated. I would have to say that too much emphasis
(in my own opinion) is being drawn to the footer - this is purely on the
basis of what my eyes rest on when I first look at the page. It does give
the feel of being pushed together, with little or no blending; it feels very
harsh on the eyes.

The colour scheme is almost entirely blue and green - is this really
sensible? I know that I will probably get someone criticising me for this,
but this does not work well for anyone who is colourblind. I used a plug-in
toolbar for FF, which allows me to switch off images; this left precious
little at the top (at the moment). I appreciate that this is still in the
process of being designed, but at the moment, all it left was a lot of white
text for links, with no title at all. There is also no style to the logo at
the top - it is crying out for something!

I hate to say this, but I think you perhaps need to go back to the drawing
board; I did read something somewhere recently, that suggested web users
seem to be going through a phase of preferring muted, softer colours, and
that as Dave says, it needs to be made more simple throughout. The drop
downs are one area I would completely redesign - do they need to be this
big?

Just my 2p, as they say...

Alex.

If you want a comment from a pure design aspect then TBH it looks awfull,
everything about it is aesthetically displeasing.

The tonal shades of colours do not mix giving a dull muddy appearance.
The line texture confueses (and makes my head hurt).
Over states make small jumps.
Visited states colours are not bold enough.
Header does line up correctly.
Header seems streched.
Top menu seems random and not well thought out.
Bevel affects around the side menu look very early 90's.

You need a lot more thought on the layout, it looks like you have got single
column div template and just dumped some stuff in it.
Keep it simple for eg. keep the top menu on a single line.
Keep colours down to a min. Start off with 3 colours and use these for the
entire site. maybe look at http://www.colorschemer.com/ or
http://www.colorcombos.com/combolibrary.html for some ideas for schemes.

all tested with ie7

If thats not what you wanted then just ignore me.
thanks
Dave
