Actually I think this has to do more with disgust with the UK press more
than anything else. Portugese police are not allowed to legally discuss
the case. This means there are a lot of reporters out there being paid
with no source of information. So they have to speculate and write anything.

Recently a UK ex-pat was arrested and released without charge. The
portugese police are not allowed to name the person unless they charge
them. The UK press worked out who it was and are now focusing on this
man who was released due to "lack of evidence". Basically an innocent UK
man who could speak fluent Portugese and tried to help as much as
possible. Apparently helping too much makes you very suspicious. Now the
press are doing there best to destroy this man's life. *sigh*
