Why?

HTML 4.0 is a perfectly acceptable web standard and given the inability
of browsers to handle properly served xhtml, is the one we should all be
using. [1]

[1] of course, I use XHTML served as text/html because I'll be able to
more easily switch when the browsers catch up...
