So what are the major factors determining pagerank??

I designed a site totally in flash - which gets a pagerank of 4 (which Is
surely pretty good considering google cannot read the flash file ...),
wheras I redid my site in HTML thinking all of that readable content and
links would increase my page rank - but that only scores 1 ... I have also
looked at my competitor websites - and ones getting a better page rank are
still only scoring 1

I read an article saying that writing articles featured on other sites was a
good method ??
