I Presume because he needs a 24 bit alpha channel png to do the
anti-aliasing on the corner edge.
I'm not quite sure why a alpha channel is needed at all though - it
looks looks to be against solid...

Not tiles, literally just used in each of the corners of a banner to
cut the corners and make them rounded.
The solution you sent to me doesn't work on my IE6
Any ideas why?...

Well, trying to do my best to accommodate those who just won't move
with the times....
Anyway, this is really annoying. Can't even use jpg's or gif's as the
colour for which I am using the corner cuto...

Try this as it also supports PNG fix for background images though not tiled
which some others do not.

Not really weird! IE6 doesn't support alpha transparency in PNGs.
Google for "IE PNG fix".
