RE: FN-FORUM: Is this fair? I cant decide...

That's a tough one, but I know what you mean.

I have done many contracts on site for big agencies in central london.

You start on the same day as a guy using Dreamweaver who is on the same rate
as you when you have 10 years in the bag.

I've done jobs with other front end people who cannot write a single line of
html or css of the top of their heads, now that is sad !

That's happened to me many times.

I think you real need to have a look at someones work to judge the quality.

If they are up and coming but have a few very good jobs under their belt
then I guess you know you will get what you are paying for but if they are
still in the web monkey phase then its 5 quid an hour tops

:)

Subject: FN-FORUM: Is this fair? I cant decide...

I got a call today from someone starting out in web development. It was
a typical networking type call, just trying to get his name out there.

I did in fact, this morning, get a small piece of work that i wasnt
going to have time to do so i asked him to quote for it. He came back
with rates that you would expect from a developer with years of
experience and a fairly substantial portfolio, neither of which he had.

It got me thinking, is it fair for people starting out to be charging
rates that more experienced developers charge? My gut feeling is to say
no, its not fair, its taken me a long time and a lot of hard graft/late
nights to get to a point where i can charge such rates, so to have
someone just "start up" charge the same seems unfair.. or am i being a
grumpy old git?
