You could use the "Discovery Contract" idea, where you agree a sum of money
for doing enough work to come up with the spec and final contract for build.
That covers you for what you need to keep body and soul together while the
customer still gets something for their money, i.e. a feasibility study.

why not do it as a deferred invoice arrangement?
e.g. you contract to work at your normal hourly rates but defer
payment until after the launch date at which time your invoice will
be presented and may be paid by:
* cash
or
* x hours of referred work
you can then make clear the value of your time and how and when that
value will be repaid.
a suggestion....
