It is connected to a laptop, therefore there is Acer Power Management
software instead of classic Windows XP's power settings panel. Hard
drives are set to never turn off.

I have tried that. It is Acer Power Management. Even if I set "turn
off hard disk" to "never" it keeps spinning down - it has its own
