Oh yeah...

but if you use 123-reg, you can register the domain for anyone, but
still control it, I just enter my email address as the contact, which
I suppose is nearly as bad.
what's best practice then?
123-reg or similar to montior domain renewals, client is registered
owner and contact (must review who isn't getting the correct email)
and a trusted colleague to handle domain name management (in the
event of me being unable to come to the computer today on account of
a touch of pining for the fjords....).
One supposes that Nominet has a mechanism for managing domains
registered "on behalf of" where the email contact is unobtainable?
