I'm not sure whether you are aware of this "feature" of the BT network or
seeking clarification.

In either case like Lorna I suspect that the OP has run into BT's policy of
only allowing SMTP relay for whitelisted "from:" addresses. I can only
imagine that this policy was set down by some PHB who doesn't understand
email; I don't know of any other ISP that does it and for reasons I'm too
tired to enumerate it's really rather stupid.
