Ah, but St. James's Palace is a name, and as such is able to be
written entirely as the owner wishes... much like Guy's Hospital, and
St. Thomas' Hospital (note the way those are written) - isn't it like
a logo in that respect?
As to the use of three letters in a row (Jess's cat) I thought a lot
relied on how it is pronounced. For example, if the extrra 's' is
normally pronounced, then it gets written. If not, it doesn't - for
example, Jeff Bridges' son
And try searching for Jesus's Cross to see how many alternatives you
get ;-)
Seems like our language, which is already a blend of several hundred
other languages, is ever evolving. I do despise seeing things badly
written in shops though - take the running store in Bluewater, Kent -
you can have trainers personalised to suit your taste. The sign goes
something like:
You're colours
You're words
You're gait
sigh.
