My take in this is that I like to develop to standards and since there are
standards available, it saves me the bother of producing them.
In the past when I've been working for various companies with a web
presence, teh attitude to standards has beedn very much dependent on the
industry and customers.
For example when working in the media everything had to be compatible with
pretty much every browser out there as you could guarantee that someone
'important' would be using something obscure and would phone the boss with a
complaint if it didn't work for them. Half of our own organisation used
Macintoshes and the other half Microsoft and just dealing with the
compatibility issues with the different versions of those was a nightmare,
without going into the Linux and open source offerings.
Having said that I have also worked in the finance industry delivering a web
application to customers in banks, stockbrokers and finance houses. In this
case I sat down with the IT department and went through the usage stats,
which showed over 97% of our users were on IE6 and above and Ms Windows. I
took these stats to the CEO with the costs of making the app compatible for
the other 3% and he said, 'sod them, if they complain, we'll buy them a PC'.
I imagine that the likes of Google, etc have done a similar exercise.
It's all about cost benefit.
