Although a programmer rather than designer I use various subdomains of
my domain artumi.com to create working demos for customers to evaluate
new stuff, before moving them to a live server.

One design company I work with will produce jpegs and email them to
clients, another produces HTML mock-ups of all the important pages of
the site and has the customers look at those. Then I generally get asked
to make the mockup use css and make the site functional.
