I always thought breadcrumbs were the list of pages you last visited (your
page history) and not the "you are here in the site menu tree" list. There
must be proper names for these two different ideas...

Breadcrumbs aren't usually needed, although my CTC maps site does seem to
need them: there are several ways to get lists of things (seach using a
point, browse by county, most popular, etc.), and it would be nice to be
able to return to the relevant list having finished viewing an item linked
from the list (of course you can use the browser's back button, but people
seem to forget that ...).
