in 6 years of freelancing i've been lucky to have only had 2 nightmare
clients. one was because they stopped communicating mid-project (as it
turned out they were in financial trouble). i ended up going the small
claims route to get what i was due.
the other was a client similar to your description; they didn't attempt to
understand design or the process, blindly argued about things they were
hiring my expertise for, were rude, had a knack of turning up at my
house/office unannounced and expecting me to drop everything else.
in this case i ended up in escalating bad-tempered duels with them and my
laid back manner/tolerance got tested like it never has before. i ended up
calling them 'unprofessional' which really upset them. since then they've
almost vanished, thankfully.
if you don't need them, focus on the good clients. no need to burn bridges
unless you really want to, just tell them you've got a 6 month contract or
something. or put your prices right up!
