This is pretty much what happened to me earlier this year. At that time
Virgin just installed a cable modem instead of sorting the set top box -
must say though, I haven't had the same problem since...

Have to admit when working from home I've got both Virgin Media Broadband
and BT Wireless Broadband, so if one goes down, there's always the other.
