First thing I'd suggest to do, if they're wanting to run (at the moment)
on the same cables etc., is use a different subnet.
For example, if they're currently using the 192.168.0.x network
addresses, you could move their network to use the 192.168.x.x network
address , which would effectively be a new "LAN".
Bear in mind, I'm no networking expert, but to my knowledge that would
do it. The parent company might need to open their internet/intranet
portals to be accessible by the new IP range as well, but that's no big
thing either.
How long would it take to set up? Could be as little as a couple of
hours (moving IP address details on the child company's PCs etc.), could
be a day or so - depends on the complexity. You could probably use the
currently-underused server as a DHCP server, which makes life even easier.
Time/Cost for maintenance would be minimal - it should run fine, same as
the parent company's network, just on a different IP range. Regular
checks on the main server for patches/updates (hell, you could even run
a server-based antivirus thing) but it should be fairly maintenance-free.
Hope that helps.
