My version is "try and claim for justifiable business expenses, as the IR
try to collect the correct tax from you (not too little, not too much)".
There are a few oddities, for example you can claim for a percentage of
heating and lighting but not for water, but on the whole it's fairly
simple. Motoring costs are a whole lot of complication, and claiming for
capital purchases (e.g. computers) is also a little complicated.
If you can find a free "self-assessment for the self-employed" half-day
course at your local tax office, I can strongly recommend it.
