RE: FN-FORUM: Server dropping network connection

date posted 15th January 2008 21:11

Ok,

In tools -> Internet Options -> Connections

First, ensure the radio for "Never Dial a Connection" is selected

Then, in "Lan Settings" on the same

Untick ALL boxed options

Also, ensure the wireless card is being assigned an IP by DCHP from the
router

Subject: RE: FN-FORUM: Server dropping network connection

I've had a call from one client earlier. He has purchased a PC of a friend
and wants it connected to his BT wireless internet. He complained that it
booted up slowly so first thing I did was check for viruses using a bootable
CD with a virus checker on. It found just over 1000 infected files!

I cleaned all of these and ran virus check using 3 separate programs - none
found. So far so good.

Now his new PC connects to his wireless router without any problems but wont
actually allow him to view any web pages. It comes up with the usual work
offline or reconnect rubbish and wont actually detect the fact that his PC
is connected to a wireless router. His other PCs can connect to his wireless
router and connect to the internet without problems. His new PC can ping the
wireless router and can ping the other PCs without any problems and all aer
operating on the same subnet range.

I suspect that his PC was originally configured to use a dial-up and has all
of the dial up files installed and is trying to use these rather than assume
his current network settings. There is evidence of installation of a BT
Voyager ADSL modem which further supports this. How can I ensure that all of
the files for dial-up are removed from his PC so that his PC can connect to
the internet using his new Wireless Router.

Or, taking into account the ferociousness of his viruses should I ignore all
of this and do a fresh re-install of Windows? Its Windows XP Home if that
makes any difference.

Nic
