When I built this, way back, it had to work with IE5, and it's still
going strong today - I think they've tweaked the design, but not the
code AFAICT

CSS has grown up a lot over the last few years.
no-one should be having a hard time of it anymore, every issue has
been fixed and well documented.
there are even quick start frameworks, the latest and nicest looking
one is this:

so no excuses...
