When I'm tinkering in this area I use JMonkeyEngine, which is Java Based
and pretty good, but then I do Java programming anyways so it works well
for me. I can't imagine a 3D game of anything more than the most minimal
complexity that would be possible for a one-person team these days- the
sheer time involved in animating and creating models, writing the game
code, scripting any narrative, sorting out the AI (the big weakness of
most games ) and getting it tested on multiple platforms being, as I'm
sure you are aware, absolutely enormous.
That said, the main thing I've been playing lately is a game called
Dwarf Fortress which was made by a one-man team and it's immense and
deep and complex and funny, but it is all done with ASCII characters-
there is always an economy somewhere...
