Hi Martin,

I recently signed up to ning.com which offers a totally customisable social
network. It's written in PHP and the authors offer the source code as a
download.

It's Saturday afternoon and rather than trying to clear up some of my
work backlog which is what I should be doing, I'm thinking of new site
ideas (that'll make me millions ;) and I'm toying with an idea that I
registered a domain for recently and have come to the conclusion rather
than spend hours/days/weeks writing my own code for a social networking
type site, I take some off the shelf code and use that as a base.

So, has anyone got any recommendations for social networking scripts,
I'd prefer the free route, but if it's not too costly I'd also consider
paying for it. I will probably want to add to the code, and have decent
control over the layout etc, I'm not 100% on features yet but stuff like
news posts, blog posts, forum, picture ratings, groups, friends lists
